Sometimes I wonder what it really means to be Generation Z. People say we are the most open-minded and informed generation ever. With the internet in our pockets, we can learn about anything in seconds, share our opinions instantly and connect with people all over the world. It sounds amazing—but is it really that simple?

On one hand, we do have freedoms previous generations could only dream of. We talk openly about mental health, identity and global issues. We question rules, challenge traditions and explore ideas that adults sometimes find strange or new. Being able to think and speak freely is a gift that shapes us in ways that were impossible before.

But here’s the catch: freedom comes with responsibility and responsibility can be heavy. We are flooded with opinions, news and expectations every day. Social media platforms are designed in such a way so that we feel the urge to react to everything posted and always thirsty to be provided with more and more information no matter the topic of discussion. Instead of clarity, sometimes this constant exposure creates confusion and pressure.

And even when we feel we “know” something, it’s easy to mistake information for understanding. We see a topic online, scroll through a few posts and suddenly think we understand it. In reality, our knowledge can be shallow and forming a real, personal opinion takes effort we rarely notice we need to make.

So maybe we are free thinkers—and maybe we are overwhelmed minds. The truth is, both are true at the same time. We have incredible tools to shape our thoughts and our future, but we also face challenges that no generation before us has had to deal with. Freedom and information are powerful, but only if we learn how to use them wisely.

At the end of the day, being Gen Z is a mix of opportunities and challenges. We have more freedom, more access to ideas and more chances to speak out than ever before—but the real skill is learning how to navigate through all of it without losing ourselves along the way.

Souvenir

When still sets the light, And neither gold blooms, I anticipate the sight, Amid your faded plumes. A bygone visage so ideal, Feelings warm as used to be, For your form is taken free, From a souvenir once real. Overbearing comes the light, Muffled by my silken sheet, When too late sets the night, And […]
