Ever since the 15th century when tulips were brought to Holland by the Ottoman Empire, they became a notorious attraction sought out by many.
The period of tulips is recorded to be in the interval of the middle of March to the middle of May. In this period many tourists try different attractions and make aesthetic memories. Most pursued landscapes are the fields of tulips where people go and take pictures. Sometimes you can even rent a bike and take a hike around the beautiful flowers. Some locals even take advantage of this period to make some profit in their businesses by adding the sacred flower to their image.
Another very visited place around this time is the Royal Flora Holland, one of the largest auction houses in the world; here people from all around the world come together as they bid on different species of tulips from the Netherlands.
This time of the year even inspired painters to let lose to their imagination and paint like there was no tomorrow. Johannes Vermeer eternalized the still-life flower around the Dutch Golden Ages. Nowadays, tulips are something that people prefer to admire from afar but in the past, around the 17th century, Holland was one of the few countries where tulips could be grown. Seeing the fact that the tulips’ price went up so much ,sometimes the income that a flourist would get in a day was even up to 10 times bigger than the annual income of a craftsman. The beauty of tulips was the primary reason they were so pursued after, the different colour that would go to each other or sometimes even more than one colour on a flower got the attention of many people around Europe. This period was named The Dutch Golden Ages. Its peak of sales started in 1634 but in February of 1637 the sales dropped dramatically. At that time, the country suffered so much that the whole economy went bankrupt due to the collaps of the market by the overpriced flowers.
The economic lesson Holland had to learn was the following: just because some flowers are really beautiful, you should not base your entire economy on them.
Undoubtedly, Holland is the unique place in the world where flowers come in a variety of colours and shapes that enhance the beauty of nature and have great emotional significance. It is the country where fields of tulips offer a spectacular view.
